The inflatable all-round SUP board combines three different functions in one: stand-up paddling, windsurfing, and it can be converted into a kayak with a seat. In this blog post, we focus on the "windsurfing" option. We always get the following questions: Is the CROSS with windsurf option suitable for beginners? Which sail is best for WindSUP? How big should the sail be? What should be considered when mounting the mast foot?

Basically, there are two variants - inflatable, so-called iRigs, and foldable rigs. The inflatable WindSUP sails are great as fun gadgets or for children. If you want to learn windsurfing seriously, we recommend investing in a foldable complete rig. This will help you get used to the necessary physical effort and learn the required technique for proper handling.

What is a complete windsurf rig?

A complete rig, as the name suggests, describes the entire sail set in which all components are optimally coordinated with each other. It is the combination of the sail, the flexible mast, and the boom, which is used for holding.

Which rig is right for the CROSS WindSUP board?

The stable and lightweight Glory Boards CROSS WindSUP is particularly aimed at beginners, families, and frequent travelers who need a compact pack size for transport. Especially if you are a windsurf beginner, the different sail sizes can initially be overwhelming. The right sail depends on wind strength, body size, and skill level. The smaller the rig, the easier it is to handle, keep upright, and pull out of the water. However, windsurfers with a larger physique should choose a larger rig. In general, we recommend a sail size of 4.5 m² for adults weighing up to 70 kg. Adults weighing over 70 kg should choose a sail between 5.0 – 6.0 m². For children, a sail size of 3.0 – 3.5 m² is sufficient. With these choices, you'll be well-equipped and can surf with your WindSUP board even in light winds of 6 to 8 knots.

Which WindSUP rig do I need for what wind strength?

The stronger the wind, the smaller the sail, and the weaker the wind, the larger the sail. So, the wind sail you choose always depends on the weather. Experienced windsurfers therefore have different windsurf sails. Everything step by step! The feeling for the right sail to match the wind comes with time and experience. What parts does a WindSUP complete rig consist of?

Mast

The mast is threaded into the loops of the sail. Windsurfing masts are usually made of aluminum, carbon, or carbon and glass fibers. Depending on their length, masts for WindSUP boards are three or four-piece.

Mast foot

The mast foot is screwed into the thread of the board and connects the board and mast. It is important to use a movable mast foot. This should be able to move in three directions. This allows the joint to yield in the direction the sail falls into the water.

Mast foot extension

You place the mast foot extension, which is often between 15 and 30 cm long, on the mast foot. The rig is then placed on the mast foot via this extension.

Boom

You hold on with the boom. The holding position is at shoulder height. However, you can freely experiment with which height you like best.

Rope

Rope or sheet start is the name given to the retrieval line used to pull the rig out of the water. This is usually included in the complete set.

How do I mount the SUP sail in the windsurf attachment of the CROSS?

So that you don't stand clueless at the entry point of your sailing spot, but can get started right away, you should know this: Screw the mast foot into the thread of the Cross. No tools are required for this! Use a powerjoint with a cardan joint that can bend without resistance. If the wind sail falls into the water, the iSUP board is thus relieved. Depending on the manufacturer, you can then assemble the rig according to the instructions.
