SUP packing list for long distances and tours
We wake up to the lively chirping of birds and the gentle lapping of water, casting our first stealthy glance out of our tent. The sun is already peeking softly from behind the clouds – what a magnificent day for the second leg of our multi-day SUP tour!
Have you ever thought about heading off on a multi-day tour with your SUP board, stopping wherever you like, pitching your tent, and paddling on the next day for as long as you enjoy it?
Here you can find our packing list for day trips and multi-day tours so you can be sure not to forget a thing on this adventure!
Properly prepared for long SUP tours – The complete packing list
Proper preparation is everything for long SUP tours. The first thing to check is the weather forecast, current conditions, and water levels. Not only rain and thunderstorms, but also too much wind can jeopardize your SUP tour. On hot summer days, you should prepare yourself with enough sunscreen and fluids.
Once you have checked the weather report, it’s time for proper route planning. Don’t overestimate yourself on your first tours, and it is best to paddle with a small group. For long SUP tours, large lakes are ideal because you can return to your starting point without any problems. Slow-flowing rivers are also suitable, of course, although the risks are higher than on standing water and it is not as easy to return to the starting point.
Touring SUP boards are best suited for long trips. You have plenty of space at the front and back of the board to transport your equipment in dry bags, they are tip-resistant, and you make faster progress than with an all-round SUP board.

These items belong on your SUP packing list for day trips
- SUP board and paddle
- SUP leash
- Headwear and sufficient sun protection
- Dry bag, in which you can carry drinks, food, and other things that should not come into contact with water.
- Smartphone in a waterproof case. You can keep your car keys in the waterproof case or in the dry bag to protect them from water.
- Possibly an action cam
- Sufficient fluids in the form of water or isotonic drinks
- Food: depending on how long your tour is, you should adjust your food accordingly. Muesli bars, apples, and other fruit provide you with the necessary energy in between. You should avoid bananas as they easily get mushy in the dry bag, unless you pack them in a Tupperware container.
- Buoyancy vest/life jacket: In Switzerland, a life jacket is mandatory if you move outside the shore zone, and this is sometimes punishable by fines. Please always inform yourself about the applicable laws; some bodies of water may only be navigated under certain conditions or not at all.
These pieces of equipment are additionally needed for multi-day tours
- Sleeping bag, tent, and sleeping mat (make sure they have the smallest possible pack size)
- Change of clothes and shoes
- Sufficient food (choose durable and non-perishable foods) and a small gas stove (don't forget a lighter or matches)
- Power bank for your smartphone so you can call for help in an emergency
- Biodegradable soap that can also be used in standing and flowing water. You can also use this soap for washing dishes.
- Small hygiene kit with toothbrush, toothpaste, and deodorant
- Mosquito spray
- Pump (in case your board gets damaged)
We wish you lots of fun on your first long SUP tour and don't forget to post a photo of it with #gloryboards, so that we can see pictures of your tour!
