Proper winter storage for stand-up paddleboards
How to store your inflatable stand up paddle board in winter!
The warm temperatures are slowly coming to an end and the last SUP sessions of the year are behind you. If you are not using your inflatable stand up paddle board for a longer period of time, then you should maintain and store it properly so that you don't experience any unpleasant surprises during your next session in spring.
Inflatable SUP boards are generally robust, extremely durable, and can take a beating if you care for them properly. In addition, you will get a better price when selling your SUP board if it looks well-maintained, and you yourself will enjoy your inflatable stand up paddle board much more if it still looks good after years.
You should definitely not store the SUP board uncleaned – possibly still slightly damp – in the transport bag throughout the winter. The stand up paddle board could get mildew stains and, in the worst case, mold. To prevent this, follow these tips for proper winter storage of your SUP board.
The right SUP care before winter storage
Before you think about storing your inflatable stand up paddle board, it's time to remove the traces of the long SUP summer.
- Inflate the SUP board slightly. You don't have to inflate it as hard as for a SUP session, but hard enough so you can carry it, turn it over, and clean it thoroughly.
- First, rinse the stand up paddle board with fresh water to wash off any saltwater residue, sand, small stones, or similar.
- If you use your SUP board frequently, it has probably accumulated some stains that you should now remove. There are special cleaning and care products for SUP boards, but household cleaners or special PVC cleaners that are not aggressive are also suitable for cleaning. After cleaning, it is best to use a SUP care product or a care product for inflatable boats.
- Dry the iSUP completely, for example with a hand towel or another soft cloth. Do not use a hairdryer to dry the SUP board and do not expose it to direct sunlight for extended periods.
- Check the stand up paddle board for any damage that needs to be repaired. Pay particular attention to the valve.
Clean the board with an inflatable boat cleaner to remove all dirt, including black streaks from the board.
Rinse thoroughly, wipe dry and then treat the board with a dinghy care product. The material will start to shine again!
The correct winter storage of your SUP board
- Pump the SUP board slightly, so it maintains its shape but is not fully inflated.
- Store the Stand Up Paddle Board in a dry, slightly warm room. If you don't have space in your living area, the boiler room might be an option, provided it's not too warm, too damp, or too cool there. The garage is likely too cool – the room temperature should never be below zero degrees. Rooms with extreme temperature fluctuations are not suitable for storage.
- Ceiling or wall mounts are suitable for storage.
- If you absolutely have no space to store the SUP board slightly inflated, you can store it loosely rolled up without a bag. Never leave it tightly rolled up in the transport bag in the car trunk over the winter, as this will damage the inflatable SUP board and significantly shorten its lifespan.
