How to care for your SUP in winter – Tips & Checklist

So pflegst du dein SUP im Winter – Tipps & Checkliste

Autumn is drawing to a close, and many stand-up paddleboarders are wondering what will happen to their SUP during the cold months. Before your board goes into hibernation, it's important to follow some care steps. With proper storage and maintenance, you'll extend the life of your SUP and ensure you're ready to go in spring. In this blog, you'll learn how to properly winterize your SUP and what you absolutely need to pay attention to!

Why is SUP care important in winter?

In the colder months, when the board is not used regularly, temperature fluctuations, moisture, and improper storage can damage the material. Small cracks or dirt can worsen if left unattended. Furthermore, mold growth due to residual moisture can damage the board's structure. To prevent this, careful cleaning, drying, and storage are crucial.

SUP Winter Care Step by Step

1. Thorough Cleaning

Before storing your SUP, it should be thoroughly cleaned. Saltwater, sand, and dirt residue can attack the material over time. Use a mild detergent and rinse the board with fresh water. Especially with inflatable SUPs, all nooks and crannies should be cleaned. We offer an organic SUP cleaner set, feel free to check it out!

2. Drying

Make sure your board is completely dry before storing it. Moisture can cause mold and odors that are difficult to remove. It's best to lay the SUP flat and wipe off any remaining water droplets with a soft cloth.

3. Crack and Damage Inspection

After the season, it's a good idea to thoroughly inspect the board for cracks, scratches, or damage. Small damages can be easily repaired with a repair kit before they worsen. Pay special attention to the valves and connection points on inflatable boards.

4. Proper Storage

To maximize the lifespan of your SUP board and ensure it's ready for the next paddling season in spring, proper storage is crucial.

The ideal way to store your SUP board is slightly inflated in a cool and dry room. Suitable locations include:

  • Dry basement
  • Utility room
  • Garage

These environments prevent the board from creasing and ensure it remains durable for a long time. Make sure the room is well-ventilated to avoid stagnant moisture.

Another alternative is to fold your inflatable SUP board and store it in its backpack for the winter. Here's what you should keep in mind:

  • Careful folding: Make sure no creases form when folding.
  • Dryness is a MUST: The board must be 100% dry when folded, otherwise there's a risk of mildew and possibly even mold growth.

5. Check Accessories

Your SUP accessories should also be cleaned and maintained. Paddles, leashes, and pumps also need some care to remain functional for a long time. Store them in a dry place and check them for possible damage.
