Glory Boards Full Moon SUP Tour on Lake Wolfgang

Glory Boards Vollmond SUP Tour am Wolfgangsee

On Saturday, July 4, 2020, conditions were perfect for an unforgettable SUP tour in the Salzkammergut. With the best summer weather, the Glory Boards Full Moon SUP Tour to the Falkensteinwand on Lake Wolfgang took place.

The meeting point was at 7:30 p.m. at the Fürberg car park, and the paddle tour was scheduled to depart at 8:00 p.m. More than 20 paddlers gathered on this warm summer evening to paddle together, exchange ideas, and experience an unforgettable SUP excursion.

By 8:00 p.m., all SUP boards were inflated and the enthusiastic paddlers were ready for a full moon tour, which was expected to last about two hours. The Glory Boards team provided all participants with colorful glow sticks so that we could see each other on the water as dusk began to fall.

Passing by the so-called "Ochsenkreuz" (Ox Cross) – a small, legendary island home to a wayside shrine commemorating the local legend – we paddled toward the massive Falkensteinwand, which stands impressively right on Lake Wolfgang. The rocky outcrops on the lake shore are frequently used by daring cliff jumpers who plunge into the lake from over 20 meters up.
This part of Lake Wolfgang is usually very quiet, as many bays are only accessible from the water. Perfect for Stand Up Paddle tours if you are looking for a quiet and secluded spot.
Below the Falkensteinwand, it was time for a short seated break and a refreshing drink on our stand-up paddle boards. It was a great opportunity for the enthusiastic stand-up paddlers to exchange tips about different SUP tours and equipment.
The Falkensteinwand is a popular destination for climbers who often take small electric boats directly to the rock face to start their climb.
Equipped with glow sticks, we headed back – accompanied all the way by the bright glow of the full moon!

Things to keep in mind for a full moon SUP tour

  • For a SUP tour that takes place after dusk, you should check the weather in advance and especially right before the tour begins, so you don't miss any summer thunderstorms or cold fronts. This could have fatal consequences, especially in the dark. Also, the full moon obviously shines best on a clear summer night.
  • You should never go on a full moon SUP tour alone; always go in pairs or as part of a group. It also doesn't hurt to let someone know that you are planning this trip.
  • Safety equipment is essential when stand-up paddling. A drybag with drinks and snacks, a warm jacket, a waterproof phone case with a smartphone for emergencies, a leash, and possibly a life jacket or Restube complete your SUP gear.
  • You should also carry a light source, because if the full moon is hidden by clouds, it can get quite dark and eerie on the water. Headlamps, such as those used by runners or ski tourers in the winter, are particularly suitable.
  • Before attempting a full moon SUP tour, you should definitely have some experience and have paddled longer distances several times before.
