SUP Tour Tips Salzkammergut

The Austrian Salzkammergut is surrounded by many myths, and there is still frequent discussion today about how the current tourism region of Salzkammergut is much larger than the original, historical Salzkammergut.

Nowadays, the Salzkammergut tourism region stretches from the province of Salzburg through Upper Austria to Styria. For the Glory Boards team, which is headquartered in the province of Salzburg, the lakes of the Salzkammergut are the ideal testing ground for our SUP equipment. The turquoise-blue Lake Fuschl often serves as the backdrop for our photos, or the dramatic scenery of the Falkenstein wall on Lake Wolfgang as the destination for our SUP excursions.

Today we are introducing you to our most beautiful SUP tours in the Salzkammergut – this article does not claim to be exhaustive, as the 76 lakes of the Salzkammergut offer an inexhaustible wealth of cool SUP tours!

SUP Tour Salzkammergut: Around Lake Fuschl

Due to its color and small bays, Lake Fuschl is an extremely popular SUP area. You can put in at Fuschl am See (there is a small public lake access point there), the Fuschl lido, or via the Hof lido.

Lake Fuschl is approximately four kilometers long and is perfect for a longer SUP tour with a picnic. You can land in the small bays—some of which are only accessible from the water—and have a picnic. By the way, Lake Fuschl is known for its excellent water quality, and the fish from Lake Fuschl taste excellent accordingly. For a stopover, the Schlossfischerei Fuschl is a great choice, offering excellent smoked fish from their own production. Perfect for a little refreshment during a SUP tour on one of the most beautiful lakes in the Salzkammergut!

SUP Tour Salzkammergut: To the Falkenstein Wall on Lake Wolfgang

For this SUP tour, it is best to drive to the Waldbad Fürberg, where you can park for a fee and pump up your SUP board. The crystal-clear Lake Wolfgang is so turquoise-blue in some places that you think you are in the Caribbean.
From the Waldbad Fürberg, you paddle towards the small island on which the so-called "Ochsenkreuz" (Ox Cross) sits enthroned. This spot on Lake Wolfgang is particularly well-suited for taking photos!
If you paddle further to the left towards St. Wolfgang, you can spot the first cliffs from the lake, which daring cliff divers use for a reckless leap into the lake. The cliffs from which daredevils plunge into the lake range from one meter to nearly twenty meters. Anyone jumping from the higher cliffs here should be sure of what they are doing!
Our SUP tour continues toward the mighty and striking Falkenstein wall. In pictures, you can easily recognize Lake Wolfgang by this "trademark." Many climbers take boats to the Falkenstein wall and begin their climb directly from the lake. If you paddle with your SUP along the Falkenstein wall, you can watch the climbers well. At the other end of the Falkenstein wall, there are numerous small bays that are only accessible from the water. On a hot summer day, when all the lidos are overcrowded, it is worth paddling out early in the morning and spending the day in one of the quiet bays.
On this SUP tour, you also have the opportunity to stop for a bite to eat on the way back. Simply paddle past your starting point, the Waldbad Fürberg, and continue paddling until you reach the Gasthof Fürberg. There, you can fortify yourself after this great SUP tour in the Salzkammergut!

SUP Tour Salzkammergut: Lake Hallstatt

Hallstatt is a world-famous town and is very popular with day-trippers. If you don't want to push your way through the alleys with the masses of people, you can also view the town in all its beauty from the water. The view of Hallstatt from the water is much more beautiful anyway! It is best to do this tour on a summer day very early in the morning or late in the afternoon. The parking lots around Lake Hallstatt are usually full during the day in summer.
The southern shore of the lake is suitable as a put-in point, as there are several parking spaces (which are not exactly cheap!) there, such as at the Hallstatt leisure center or the Winkl natural swimming beach. You can pump up your SUP board and put in there easily. From here, you paddle north to Hallstatt. Lake Hallstatt makes a somewhat eerie impression, as it is very dark in many places—especially after rainfall. Please note during your SUP tour on Lake Hallstatt and when choosing the right SUP clothing that the water temperature is rather cool even in midsummer and only rarely reaches the 20-degree mark.
By the way, you can take great pictures of Hallstatt from the water, usually relatively undisturbed. The dark lake surrounded by high mountains is not only incredibly impressive for stand-up paddlers!
Tip: From Hallstatt, it is not very far to Gosau. If you want to stop for a bite after your SUP tour, avoid the crowded restaurants in Hallstatt and drive to the tranquil Gosau instead.

SUP Tour Salzkammergut: Exploring Lake Mondsee

Lake Mondsee is very interesting for stand-up paddlers because there are many put-in points where you can sometimes park for free. In addition, some public lidos are suitable, where you only pay a small daily parking fee.
With a length of approx. 11 kilometers, Lake Mondsee is one of the larger lakes in the Salzkammergut, and many different SUP tours are possible.
SUP tours on Lake Mondsee at sunrise or sunset are especially beautiful. For our SUP tour suggestion, park in the St. Lorenz public bathing area. You can put in perfectly there and paddle to the right towards the south, viewed from the shore. Here, you have a particularly beautiful view of the sunrise as the sun comes up behind the mountains. In the morning, the water here is indescribably calm, and you usually only encounter a few swans and ducks. Along the shore of the lake are great houses and villas. As you paddle past the lake houses, you come to an untouched part of the lake where the water is very shallow. Here you can take great pictures and have an excellent view of the Schafberg. Here you cross the lake and paddle back on the other side. You can stop for a bite to eat, for example, at the See Restaurant Mondsee. In the Loibichl lido, there is also the SUP Box, where you can rent our Glory Boards in the summer if you do not yet own your own SUP equipment.

SUP Tour Salzkammergut: Winter

For most of us, stand-up paddling is a sport for the summer months. However, this video gives a good insight into what a SUP tour during the winter months in the Salzkammergut could look like. For tours during the winter months, special equipment and a good stance on the board are a prerequisite!

SUP Tip Salzkammergut

Pay close attention to the weather and the forecast during your SUP tours in the Salzkammergut. Especially in the mountains, the weather can change quickly, and a suddenly approaching thunderstorm or strong wind can dampen your stand-up paddle fun.
