The Right Gear for Stand Up Paddle Beginners
Stand Up Paddling is a sport that can be practiced almost all year round if you are properly equipped. This means not only the SUP board and the paddle, but also additional equipment that first ensures more safety and second enables longer tours.
Many SUP beginners approach us with questions about the right equipment. Of course, the first step is to choose the right SUP board and suitable paddle.
If you plan to be on lakes as well as calm canals, an all-around SUP board or the slightly sportier touring SUP board is the right choice for you. An aluminum paddle is sufficient for the beginning, but we also recommend considering and trying out a fiberglass paddle from the mid-price range, as you will benefit from the paddle's lower weight on longer distances.
Once you have decided on a SUP board and the appropriate paddle, you are almost ready to go!

The right SUP leash
A leash is the connection between the SUP board and the rider. However, it is important to choose the appropriate leash for the specific use, as an incorrectly chosen leash can lead to injuries in the worst case. A surf leash from surfboards is not suitable as it is too short. A straight leash is suitable for waves but should not be used in rivers or shallow water, as the leash can get tangled in objects in the water if it hangs in the water. A coiled leash is suitable for shallow water - for whitewater and rivers you should choose a coiled leash with a safety release. -
The right SUP clothing
When the lakes have reached swimming temperatures in the summer months, swimwear is usually sufficient for stand-up paddling. Adequate sun protection and headwear are essential on warm summer days. In spring and autumn, when the water temperature drops below 20 degrees, the choice falls on special SUP wetsuits. SUP clothing protects your body, keeps it warm, and provides more freedom of movement than classic wetsuits from the surfing world. In winter, a dry suit is mandatory, but you should only venture into stand-up paddling in winter if you feel very confident and are part of a group. -
Dry bag and waterproof smartphone case
A dry bag is a waterproof bag in which you can carry various items if you are planning a longer SUP tour. You can attach dry bags to the cargo net of your SUP board. In the dry bag, you can safely store your smartphone, camera, car keys, spare clothes, and a water bottle. There are special waterproof cases for smartphones that you can also hang around your neck. -
Life vest or buoyancy aid
Before you start stand-up paddling, you should definitely brush up on your swimming skills. Although you rarely fall off the board, you should be able to swim just in case. The best buoyancy aid is definitely the SUP board itself, but a life vest or a rescue buoyancy aid gives you additional safety. In some countries, such as Italy, wearing a life vest is even mandatory when engaging in water sports activities. -
SUP pump
To inflate your inflatable SUP board, you have the choice between a manual pump and an electric pump. For beginners, the manual pump is definitely sufficient. Manual pumping also warms up your body before paddling. Electric pumps are powered by the cigarette lighter in the car, the car battery, or a rechargeable battery.
